THE STAPLE FLANNEL
In today’s winter back to school outfit ideas x Diamond Supply Co. I decided to style this super cute flannel from their fall collection. I love getting goodies in the mail, but even more than that is getting stuff that you actually want to wear. Enter this guy, or gal… whatever. The point is, flannels are great casual pieces that can add an instant edge and personality to any outfit., and if you are a Cali girl, not having one of these in your closet is almost a sin.
Honestly, I’m not quite sure I own a flannel of my own, not a super cute women’s one at least. My collection of flannel is pretty much stolen from my husband closet ( I like to call it “The Boyfriend Flannel”), and samples that I’ve designed before from contemporary men’s brands that I used to work with. That being said, it’s great to have an actual weight flannel that fits my body and doesn’t look stolen. When I received this particular box of goodies I wanted to do a series of back to school looks because I know how frustrating it can be to be in a rush in the morning and not have enough time to luck as “cute” as you wanted to be. So I’m leaving you with my top 3 tips on how to absolutely rock your outfits everyday, even when you get out of bed 15 mins before you have to leave the house!
…how to absolutely rock your outfits every single day, even when you get out of bed 15 mins before you have to leave the house…
Now I believe this is genuinely impossible to get right every single time unless you do some planning. And just a disclaimer, I am not suggesting waiting until the 11th hour to hop out of bed, but we all know that those days will come, and when they do you are going to be so prepared! Stick to the end for an awesome freebie and some cool action steps to take right now.
THE THREE HABITS TO TAKE ON RIGHT NOW
It’s almost February! Okay, maybe we have a little while to go but the way time flies these days, time has a nasty way of creeping up on me. In a post holiday the spirit of the “new year, new you, new habits”, I’d like to suggest that we ditch that, and think something more practical here, like “
new year, new you, new habits, new closet.” Now hold on, before your mind goes there, I am not talking about shopping. Lord knows we did enough of that during the holidays. I’m talking about thinking smarter about using the things that we already own, and being less consumptive in the process. There couldn’t be better timing to adopt these great and simple habits. If you saw my last post on my Back to School outfit ideas, I discussed my top three tips for dressing comfortably, but today we are going to archive your closet for success, regardless of how much time you have to get dressed.
1. LAY IT OUT THE NIGHT BEFORE
It started this habit in college when I was schedule for super early morning classes, and continued through to my last few years working in corporate fashion. I used to be against planning my outfits ahead, always concerned that I would want to change my mind anyway, so its a waste of time. What I learnt from doing this regularly is that it gave me such a head start, allowed me to snooze for an extra 10 minutes or have a longer shower, and I almost never changed my outfit from what I originally styled. If this is something that you already do, tweet me or leave a comment down below and let me know how it improved your morning! If this is new for you, try doing this tomorrow! Trust me, you’ll be thanking yourself later.
Tip:Lay your outfit out on a hanger or dresser, including all your accessories. I like to steam everything the night before as well so there is zero morning prep time.
2. YOU KNOW, THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT
I love a good challenge, and organizing, archiving and styling any part of my home gives me such a peace and joy. Which is why I’m pretty much obsessed with Stuff ‘n Style. This genius idea is an app where you can catalogue your closet and plan your outfits in advance, heck, it even recommend outfits for you – hows that for a personal stylist? And a bonus is that is is free. Now the hardest part about this process is actually taking photos of your clothes, but you can fast track that part by simple emailing your photos to a stylist and they can archive outfits for you and suggest the best combinations. Whoah!
3. CREATE A CAPSULE WARDROBE
A capsule wardrobe is great for seasonal dressing. Inspired by bloggers like Unfancy and Viviana Does Makeup, a capsule wardrobe can be based on any number of pieces (Viviana suggests 37) that are curated for a season. The idea is that you only wear those selective pieces for an entire season, and therefore should have no reason to shop. I know this may sound intimidating at first, but it is it well worth the time. Which I why I decided to make this super easy for you, and create an easy starter guide on how to create your first capsule wardrobe. For those of you who like to get a little fancier, keep in mind that this does not have to be boring basics, but by minimizing the clutter, we can maximizing how you slay your outfit, on the daily.
So are you down to start curating that closet of yours?
